Full Text
The New York Herald now and then puts a bushel of wisdom into a nutshell: not often, 'tis true, but still now and then it speaks to the point with admirable directness. Thus in a recent word to the workingmen of the country it says they should oppose "that greatest of frauds, a protective tariff. Let them vote against the coinage of a bogus silver dollar; let them set their faces against a wasteful expenditure of public money-which is derived from taxation and is thus furnished in great part by themselves-and against corrupt legislation. It is only the demagogue who promises wealth and an easy time to all. Let the workers shun him and his measures, for these must result disastrously."
