The King has broken all the Parliaments, and they have protested against the measure as illegal, and are endeavouring to persuade the poor ignorant, happy, quiet, public, that his measures are oppressive and tending to tyranny, because they have for end the destruction of the almost unlimited and destructive power of the Nobility and Clergy.
Will they succeed? An infatuated love for Nobility, which prevails among the peasantry of this country, will favor, I fear, too much their selfish designs: But for the love of humanity and liberty, I hope they will be thwarted. In Dauphiny the subjects have taken arms, to prevent the military from compelling an enregistrement of the new regulations; which they effected, after the loss of a few lives, and took the commanding officer under the King, prisoner, and made him protest against the orders of his master, in a letter to the Minister, wrote with a suspended weapon of death over his head, with intention to put an end to his life in case of refusal. The same measures have been taken in Brittany, but with less rigour and without taking arms. These are the only Provinces that have manifested such violent opposition, they being two that have many extra privileges. In the Isle of France, the eyes of the People are more opened, and a great majority of them are against the Parliament, and in favor of the new measures.
The Parliament of Guienne have left Libourne and come to Bordeaux, as private bourgeois, being deprived of their red robes.
