TRIBUTE TO BRYAN.
No matter what the future political career of William J. Bryan may be, impartial history in years to come will give him a high and exalted place among great Americans who were true to principle, unswerving in their devotion to what they believed to be the right, honest and incorruptible in every way, and as stainless in public as in private life.
The United States has brought forth many men of great parts—men of brilliancy in the ranks of diplomacy; men admired the whole world over as statesmen; men whose swords have carved for themselves an enduring place of high honor among Generals of the world; men distinguished in the scientific and literary world; men at whose touch disease has fled dismayed, and even the hand of death been checked; men who have been really great, each in his own particular walk and station.
But as unswerving devotees to a high ideal; as men in whom selfishness was an unknown quantity; as men who were swayed by considerations of duty and swerved neither to the right nor to the left for popular applause or personal gain; as men who believed country should be ever above party, and party be influenced by principle rather than by considerations of policy; as men, in fine, who looked upon their fellow-men from the point of view of Christ and not of Mammon—two names shine out in American history as the Northern Star appears to the storm-tossed mariners—Abraham Lincoln and William J. Bryan.
And as time goes on, they will shine all the brighter—Sacramento Bee.
