A new cold wave, probably the severest and most prolonged yet this winter, was racing down across the northern great plains from western Canada today with prospects that it would carry as far southward as the Texas Panhandle and Ohio river valley by tomorrow.

"Temperatures are falling at an astounding rate in the storm area," the Chicago weather bureau reported. At Dickinson, N. D., the mercury had skidded from a high of 41 yesterday to 15 below zero this morning and was still falling.

Miles City, Mont., which basked in 55-degree weather yesterday had a -1 this morning, while the mercury slipped 25 degrees in six hours at Bismarck, N. D., to -13.

The storm borne along by a strong northwest wind, was blowing up a mixture of dust with the drifting snow at Fargo, N. D., the weather bureau said.

The forecasters said the frigid wave, expected to be of three days duration, would hit the midwest tonight, accompanied by strong shifting winds and snow flurries.

The temperatures in northern Minnesota were expected to hit 30 below by Tuesday morning with northwestern Wisconsin's low at -15.

Southeastern Wisconsin, still reeling from the effects of last week's blizzard, could expect a drop to -5.

Heavy blowing and drifting snow was predicted for Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Chicago and northern Illinois forecast was zero to 5 below.

In the Yukon territory, the tiny village of Snag moved back into the weather headlines over the weekend. The weather station at Snag recorded an 82.6 degrees below zero reading late Saturday. It's the coldest temperature ever recorded on the North American continent.
