Mayor Fails In Attempt To Put Editor Of International On Spot: Here's Some Advice For Bettwy

Before a crowd that packed the council chambers, Mayor Bettwy tried to put the editor of the Nogales International on the spot at a meeting of the board of aldermen Monday night. AND HE FAILED.

The editor of The International as he entered the city hall had a feeling Bettwy might try to do such a thing for we were, and are, well aware of the fact that the campaign launched by this paper a week ago Wednesday to recall "his honor" is sweeping the town like summer flood waters used to swirl down Grand avenue before Uncle Sam poured several hundred thousand dollars into Nogales.

Here is what Bettwy undoubtedly planned to do.

Pop some questions at the editor of this paper, attempt to muddle him up, and in the excitement have him make some statements on the spur of the moment that might be hard to substantiate.

The Mayor was told that what we had to say would appear in the columns of this paper.

"Haven't you any constructive thought or advice to give the council?" asked the Mayor.

"We will publish our advice but you will not take advice anyway," the Mayor was told.

But you have published considerable about me and the sheet iron deal," said the Mayor.

"What is it all about?"

"Read the paper", replied The International editor.

The Mayor was also told that this paper's battle is not against the entire city administration. IT IS AGAINST BETTWY ONLY.

Since the Mayor has asked for advice we'll give him some in print, but, knowing him as we do after 14 long years, we have every reason to believe it will go in one ear and out the other.

If Bettwy would take advice from such men as Wirt G. Bowman, Duane Bird, the city aldermen, and others, AND FOLLOW THAT ADVICE, he might get somewhere, at least he might soften for awhile the intense feeling prevailing against him.

Here's our advice that, unless we are mistaken, will fall from Bettwy's shoulders like water from a duck's back:

1. Take members of the board of aldermen into your confidence. Remember they have much power and that YOU YOURSELF ARE NOT THE ABSOLUTE RULER OF THIS CITY.

2. Get into your head that you will get nowhere unless you get cooperation from the aldermen.

3. REINSTATE P. J. STACY AS STREET SUPERINTENDENT AND LET STACY AND OTHER DEPARTMENT HEADS RUN THEIR RESPECTIVE DEPARTMENTS. They know far more about their duties than you would ever know in a hundred years. Stacy, an engineer of many years standing, is the most efficient street superintendent the city ever had. He was your best appointment and you certainly pulled a bonehead when you fired him.

See there is no firing of subordinates in order that you may get revenge on aldermen who do not vote as you desire them to.

5. Reinstate Stanley Bryant in the street department.

6. Try to get back into the good graces of the labor union, and remember their support is what elected you Mayor.

7. Reduce city expenditures.

employees for a city of this size is absolutely out of the question and, if not stopped, will bankrupt Nogales.

8. Fulfill your campaign promises to give Nogales lower water rates, lower license fees, and a Y. M. C. A. (A Y. M. C. A. will keep youths from loafing in barrooms and pool halls).

9. Instruct your police to clean up a matter immediately after there is a repetition of incidents such as the hurling of tomatoes at the bulletin board of this paper a week ago Wednesday. DON'T WAIT ALMOST A WHOLE WEEK.

It is the duty of you and the police to uphold the laws.

During your time as mayor you will get more cooperation from the public if you will follow the above advice.

The recall movement started by this paper naturally has caused the public to watch each and every step the Mayor takes and this paper will not hesitate one moment in laying down a barrage every time "his honor" makes a misstep.

The Mayor will HAVE OUR SUPPORT IN CONSTRUCTIVE MATTERS but otherwise -- NO.

Bettwy is said to have declared time and time again that he was only using the mayorship as a stepping stone to the governorship.

He fell down and crashed on the first flight.

Are you sure?
