SPANISH DAY BY DAY

By DR. D. G. McLORIN

The Spanish language as you know, is a Romance language, but you cannot get that romantic sound if the words are not pronounced correctly. If the rules here given are followed closely, the proper pronunciations of these words will be very simple. There are 5 vowels in the Spanish grammar, a, e, i, o, u. These are divided into strong and weak. By the combination of one strong and one weak vowel, we form a diphthong. The a, e, and o are regarded as strong vowels. The i and u are the weak vowels. One strong "a" and one weak "i" must be blended together to form a single syllable. In the following words you will notice some of these diphthongs:

SPANISH ENGLISH
agua water
amor love
corazon heart
labor labour
trabajar to work
bailar dance
sitio place--location
vestir dress
beber drink
peso dollar
alegre glad
mano hand
