Full Text

The Poll Tax.

The Rock Islander of last week censures Mayor Mott because he enforces the payment of the poll tax, and says he is no friend of the poor man. This statement is characteristic of the untruthfulness of that sheet. The poll tax amounts to $1.50, and the law says if it is not paid, the city can enter suit and collect $3.00 from each person that refuses to pay. Does the city do this? No, it only collects the original amount, $1.50. If Mayor Mott so desired he could collect twice that amount, and he would be upheld by the law. Mayor Mott is, and has always been the friend of the workingman.
