The Glenmore Distilling Co.'s Warehouses at Owensboro, Ky., Burned, Together with Nearly Twenty Thousand Barrels of Whisky—Three Cottages Also Burned.
OWENSBORO, Ky., April 8.—Fire broke out in one of the Glenmore Distilling Co.'s warehouses here at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon and at 4 o'clock the four large warehouses adjacent to the distillery proper were in ashes. The buildings contained 18,987 barrels of whisky, and there were 400 barrels on which the tax had been paid. The buildings were well equipped and expensive structures, and two of them were new.
The fire department could not reach the fire on account of its being located outside of the water limit, and the men who were on the ground were utterly powerless. The wind blew a gale and fanned the flames till they reached three cottages above the warehouses. These were licked up in less time than it takes to tell it.
The Glenmore Distilling Co. was the principal loser. Slack & Perkins lost about 140 barrels, Thixton, Mille & Co. lost 800 barrels. There were several other firms whose losses could not be found out. The total loss is said to be $350,000. The insurance is about $100,000.
