Full Text

The Emperor's Military Affairs seem to be in a very bad State, and the Conduct of the Imperial Court towards their Generals is not likely to make it better; poor Doxat is cut off; brave Seckendorff has been disgraced and imprisoned; Field Marshal Philippi manifestly disgusted; Count Konigsegg every Day expected to lay down: Another Campaign in all Probability may furnish us with as many more quondam brave Soldiers Misfortunes. Nothing but Success can at present preserve an Imperial Officer in Favour. To judge of Merit by Success was formerly the Mark of a low Mind; it seems otherwise now: But certainly that Gentleman's Case is very hard, who is obliged to stake all his Honour by long and faithful Service acquired, on every Turn of Fortune's wavering Wheel.

Event Details

The Emperor's military affairs are in a very bad state, worsened by the Imperial Court's conduct towards generals. Specific misfortunes include Doxat being cut off, Seckendorff disgraced and imprisoned, Philippi disgusted, and Konigsegg expected to lay down his position. Another campaign may bring more such cases for brave soldiers. Merit is now judged only by success, contrary to former views, forcing officers to risk their honor on fortune's wheel.
