"Great inroads are made each year upon our big game by predatory animals," according to B. F. Gerry, Secretary of the Montana Sportsmen's Association. "It will surprise many to know that a careful survey in our National Forests from 1924 to 1929 showed that the number of deer killed by predatory animals and other causes exceeded the number killed by hunters.
"The percentage of elk and other game killed by this menace is much less. It is estimated that 36,000 deer were killed in this manner during these five years. The value of this number of deer and other game animals runs into large figures.
"Due to ideal hunting conditions, with some snow in most sections, a great many are led to believe that there has been a large increase in our big game. The increase in any one season under very favorable conditions is comparatively small. This is one reason why the people of Montana should not delay any longer in giving more thought and support to the conservation, protection, and propagation of our wild life.
"Our predatory animal control, under the supervision of the Biological Survey, was very active during the month of August, having killed 170 coyotes, one bobcat, and 21 stock-killing bears. A part of this fund for carrying on this most important work comes from a portion of the receipts of our fishing and hunting licenses. More funds are needed for this work, and this money must come from an increase in our present license fee.
"Killing of these predatory animals should be done at every opportunity by every hunter when afield, as it is most important for the preservation of our wild life."
