Full Text

From the Southern Recorder.

A gentleman of our neighborhood, who has recently been at Columbia, S. C. gives us information which we hear with much regret, the excitement produced in our sister-State by the passage of the Tariff, threatens consequences to the tranquility of the States of a serious kind. It was even proposed by some, as our informant has stated to us, to throw open the port of Charleston and permit the landing of foreign goods without paying duty. This would be a measure of rashness amounting to open rebellion, and would terminate in civil war or a separation of the States, either of which we view as a far greater evil than the Tariff act, much as we dislike that unjust, oppressive law.
