"I laid me down to sleep last night,"
Like any honest man,
And thought of her of whom I'll write—
My soul-enchanting Ann.
I thought her form was chaste and fair,
With spirit blithe and gay;
She has a sweet, enchanting air,
Which round her features play.
While thus my thoughts were running on,
Sweet slumber closed my eyes,
And then in dream this paragon
I sought—and found the prize.
My lips I pressed e'en to her face,
And gave a tender kiss,
And she return'd a kind embrace,
Which filled my soul with bliss.
I thought myself in Paradise—
E'en blessed like those above ;
But oh! my dream was too concise—
'T' was like a dream of love.
For I awoke—in my embrace
I found a saucy cat,
That had begun to scratch my face—
And oh! I felt so flat.
[Such cat-astrophes would be a glorious cat-holicon for all who are particularly love-sick—as good as cold pudding.]
