Event Details
The Independent Republican committee of 100 met tonight in Brooklyn to decide whether the organization should be made permanent. President Maxwell favored permanency to hold the balance of power between the two parties. Rev. Henry Ward Beecher supported it, stating he was Republican in local matters and Democrat in national ones, and believed Independents elected Cleveland, obligating support until forfeited. The organization should remain intact, ready to be summoned.
