Full Text
Sacred to the Memory of the
Rev. Mr. WHITEFIELD.
When the rising SUN dispels the Shades,
And shoots the sparkling Beams around,
The vast Expansé of gloomy Darkness fades,
And vanishes beneath the Ground.
Stupendous Lights; sequester'd hide their Face,
Nor ev'n their Halo's to be seen,
When bright APOLLO enters on his Race,
In his majestic, graceful Mein.
So shining WHITEFIELD illuminates Mankind;
How matchless he enrob'd appears,
With holy Pathos, striking, and refin'd,
While others roam in humbler Spheres.
Seraphick Strains, from his angelic Voice,
Flow'd forth, in captivating Lays,
And Thousands, feebler, pious Saints rejoice,
Enlightened by his rapt'rous Ways.
From East's extensive Bounds, to Western
Lands,
Flew his illustrious, ardent Soul,
To teach the World th' ETERNAL's just
Commands,
To serve the LORD from Pole to Pole.
Astonish'd Millions heard his Accents sweet,
While pleading on his sacred Throne ;
Some fear, and love, and some he greets --
Thus in his Orb, great WHITEFIELD shone.
But Ah ! so HEAV'N ordains; Death's Arrow
sticks ;
He swoons away and sweetly dies,
Leaves his blest Urn, with Sister Dust to mix;
And soars thro' the ethereal Skies.
Attending Throngs of radiant Angels wait,
His quick Departure from this Clod,
His nobler Spirit to convoy in State,
And bear it to his Father, GOD.
