ELABORATE ARRANGEMENTS BEING MADE FOR CELEBRATING WHITMAN MASSACRE.
Arrangements for the celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of the Whitman massacre are being planned with elaborate care. The date on which Dr. Whitman, wife and companions were massacred by the Cayuse Indians, was November 29, 1847.
A special train bearing all those who wish to go will leave this city on Friday afternoon at 1:20 o'clock. The governors of Oregon, Idaho and Washington have been invited to attend the services and although it is not certain they will attend, yet it is probable they will at least be represented. At the monument they will make brief speeches after which a survivor of the massacre will relate the experience.
Returning the train will leave the monument about 3:30.
In the evening special commemorative services will be held in the big tabernacle at the corner of East and Poplar streets. Rev. Dr. M. Mathews, one of the most noted platform speakers of the day, will deliver the address of the evening. Rev. Edwin Eells will give an historical talk. It is hoped at this time to announce the entire raising of the debt of $1100 on the monument. People from all over the state have been invited and the occasion will be a great one.
