TWENTY-THREE INDICTED
Operators of Slot Machines Hit Hard by the
New Hanover Grand Jury

(Special to News and Observer.)
Wilmington, N. C., Jan. 9.—The grand
jury upon the close of New Hanover Superior
Court this afternoon returned true
bills of indictment against twenty-three
operators of slot machines in the city.
Judge Peebles ordered that the machine
owners be arrested and required to give
bond in the sum of $200 for their appearance
at the March term of court. He
also ordered that the sheriff say to each
defendant arrested that if it shall appear
that after arrest he has continued to unlawfully
operate a slot machine and such
defendant is convicted, his conduct will
be considered a defiance of the law and
he will be punished accordingly.
