Resolutions adopted by the Editors and Publishers Association of Wisconsin at their Eleventh Annual Session:
Whereas, the members of the Editors and Publishers Association of Wisconsin having had an opportunity of meeting in Convention the members of the Editors, and Publishers Association of Minnesota at this Eleventh Annual Convention, and having found in these gentlemen true and able representatives of the fearless and influential press of the young and flourishing Commonwealth of Minnesota whose growth and prosperity they are doing so much to promote and which adds so largely to the influence of the entire Northwest, and that by this interchange of friendly and fraternal intercourse we have been enabled to cultivate and perpetuate the acquaintance so auspiciously begun while witnessing the enterprise and magnificent resources of our sister State, and regarding this meeting as the most profitable and pleasant in the history of our existence, attended as it has been by the profuse hospitalities and attentions of some of the most flourishing cities of Wisconsin and Minnesota: therefore
Resolved, that the thanks of this Association are due, and are hereby tendered to the citizens of Sparta for the prompt and hearty welcome bestowed upon the members of the Convention and to Corresponding Secretary W. H. Farnham, D. McBride, Jay Whipple, L. B. Noyes and Senator D. W. C. Wilson, for the numerous courtesies that they promoted and were so active in carrying out, and we trust that our wishes for the prosperity and happiness of the hospitable and enterprising residents of Sparta and their beautiful village, with its flourishing paper mill, its other manufacturing advantages and pleasant dances graced by unrivaled beauty, may be more than realized.
Resolved, That the hospitable reception so heartily tendered by President Seymour, Postmaster Lottridge, General Kellogg, Dr. Cameron, B. F. Montgomery and the citizens of La Crosse, in meeting the members of the Editorial Association with carriages at the railroad depot, and escorting them through the streets of their city with a band of music to the International hotel, where they were supplied with a bountiful and elegant repast before embarking on the steamer Milwaukee for St. Paul, is deeply appreciated as exhibiting the natural enterprise and spirit of the flourishing Gateway City, whose warm-hearted citizens again heartily bestowed their attentions, on the return of some of the party to their respective homes.
Resolved, That from the pleasures of the trip up the magnificent Mississippi river, on the steamer Milwaukee, and the attentions of its efficient and considerate Captain J. T. West, we judge that the Northwestern Union Packet Company's line, managed by Commodore Davidson, is a good line to travel on, and that we always want to travel "it out on that line."
Resolved, That the generous and overflowing hospitalities of the Editors and Reporters of the city of St. Paul, and of Mayor Otis and his social fellow citizens, is something to pleasantly regard and ever be gratefully remembered, and that we heartily wish that many more besides ourselves may enjoy the pleasures of a visit to that picturesquely located and enterprising city, whose stone blocks and mammoth buildings speak more than expressed wishes could for its future prosperity and development, and that we highly value the ride through the city in carriages with a band of music, the visit to the reunion of the gallant First Minnesota Volunteers, showing thinned but exultant ranks after the ravages of war, as also the visit to the performance of East Lynne, at the Opera House, considerately provided by the Editorial Association of Minnesota and the closing banquet in the vast and impressive skating rink.
Resolved, That the speed and comfort with which we were conveyed on the Pacific Railroad from St. Paul to Minneapolis, shows the managers of the road to be "right men in the right place."
Resolved, That the profuse and excellent arrangements provided for us by Mayor Morrison, Hon. Cyrus Aldrich, General W. D. Washburn and the citizens generally, as also by the cordial members of its Press, will most emphatically linger in memory, and that the spectacle of the long array of carriages which conveyed and accompanied us throughout the inspection of the great natural beauties, and unrivalled manufacturing advantages of this favored city; the sumptuous and welcome banquet and suitable accompanying entertainment at the Fair Ground, and the overflowing courtesies which surrounded us until our departure on the cars, can never be forgotten.
Resolved, That the trip on the Minnesota Central Railroad, from Minneapolis to St. Paul, and the facilities so considerately given by its managers for the party to visit Minnehaha Falls, and see the other beautiful scenery on the line of this road, offered us a delightful and appreciated pleasure.
Resolved, That the conduct of Captain Webb, of the steamer Itasca, in keeping his boat waiting two hours at St. Paul for the party, and in making the run of 208 miles, from St. Paul to La Crosse, in ten hours, in the endeavor to connect with the morning train, and the warm hearted and courteous hospitality with which he entertained us on his boat, lead us all to hope that he may long live to enjoy his reputation of the model steamboat Captain of the upper Mississippi river.
Resolved, That the members of the Wisconsin Editorial Association, wish to express and put on record their obligations to Commodore William F. Davidson, the President of the Northwest Packet Company, their high appreciation of his liberality and kindness to them on this occasion, and his constant and active efforts to promote their enjoyments and comfort during the excursion on the Mississippi river, which deserve and shall receive the heartiest and warmest return they make for such unlimited hospitality and unfailing politeness, and that it will give us the greatest pleasure to recognize the claims he has on us to our favor and patronage at all times, and in a way that will have a tendency to promote not only the interest of the company he so generously represents, which has been ever ready to extend every facility and accommodation not only to the public but to the press of the country.
Resolved, That the thanks of the Wisconsin Editors and Publishers Association are tendered to the Milwaukee & Prairie du Chien, Milwaukee & St. Paul and to the Chicago & Northwestern Railway Companies for their kindness in passing us over their respective roads from and to the scene of the Editorial excursion, and also to Goodrich's line of Lake steamers, and to the Winona & St. Peter and to the Minnesota Central Railroad Companies, our thanks are due for the courtesies that they have extended to the Wisconsin Press.
Resolved, That our thanks are hereby due and tendered to Governor Marshall, other State officers, the Congressional Representatives of Minnesota and the Minnesota Editors' and Publishers' Association for their munificent and courteous attentions.
Resolved, That the thanks of the Association are hereby tendered to Gen. David Atwood, of the State Journal, for the able annual address read by him, and to H. R. Hayden, Esq., of Milwaukee, for the suitable annual poem, and to those who prepared the obituary notices read.
Resolved, That the thanks of the Association are hereby tendered to President Charles Seymour, for his earnest and successful endeavors to make this a most happy and instructive meeting of the Wisconsin Editorial fraternity, and that his energetic and indefatigable exertions, in behalf of our Association, are by us deeply appreciated and will be ever valued much more than our humble testimony of regard to him and his estimable lady can sufficiently express.
Resolved, That the warmest thanks of the Editorial Association are due to Hon. James Ross, its Recording Secretary, for his untiring efforts to render both the Convention and the excursion a success, and that we improve the present opportunity to express to him our gratitude, wishing him many years of prosperity and happiness, and an uninterrupted connection with the Wisconsin Editorial Association.
Resolved, That the thanks of the Association are hereby tendered to J. F. Barks, the skilled and accommodating photographist of Janesville, Wisconsin, who accompanied the excursion and took a series of photographic and stereoscopic views commemorative of the time.
Resolved, That the newspapers of Wisconsin and Minnesota be, and are hereby requested to publish the foregoing resolutions in full, and that when convenient, they also publish the short and excellent resolutions concerning the amendment of the law of libel, adopted at this session.
