JUNEAU (Alaskans and
election followers in the States
who wonder how Alaska, and pos-
sibly the nation, are going to go
aren't going to have to wait so
long in the future for results
from the polls.
Gov. Heintzleman notified the
legislature Friday he had signed
into law the bill to increase the
ballot-counting crew in big elec-
tion precincts. It provides three
extra counters will be added on
election night to take over the
job of tallying in precincts with
over 200 voters. The act states
that its purpose is to get the fast-
est election returns possible.
It was introduced to eliminate
the locking up of ballots on elec-
tion night by weary day workers
at the polls. The bill was intro-
duced by the House Territorial
Affairs Committee.
Other bills signed by the gov-
ernor included:
An act to create a territorial
library board which will name a
territorial librarian with an aim
of providing library facilities for
outlying communities;
An act to exempt double ser-
vice veterans from repaying the
bonus they got for World War II
service if they seek veterans' loans
on the basis of their later Korean
War service;
An act to provide for flying the
United States and Alaska flags at
every
territorial institution
and
for
displaying
U.S.
flags
at
schools and at the polls;
An act to provide
that
cities
can
adopt nationally
recognized
codes, in such fields as electrical
and plumbing, by reference only.
An act to provide for an in-
crease of the Territorial Textbook
Commission to six members, in-
cluding both teachers and admin-
istrators, who will
meet every
two years instead of every four.
