In Senate, a bill has passed, 18 to 17, for regulating the choice of Town Officers. By this bill no pecuniary qualifications are to be required of voters for town officers. No votes are to be counted until the poll is closed; and the poll may be kept open to any hour.
A bill has also passed authorizing the Governor and Council to appoint (and remove) the Clerks of the Supreme Judicial and other Courts.
A committee of the Senate has been raised to report on the expediency of limiting the duration of county officers.
Yesterday a petition of Wm. Gray and others, praying for the establishment of a New Bank, was read and committed.
In the House, since Saturday, very little public business has been transacted. The bill on the subject of Religious Worship has been under discussion. Yesterday, Mr. Miller, to test the principle of the bill, moved to strike out a leading section, which was advocated by the mover and Mr. Hooper; and opposed by Messrs. Cushman and Cannon, and negatived, 212 to 184. The passage of the bill was then advocated by Messrs. Cannon, Ripley, and others; and opposed by Messrs. Greene, (of B), Townsend, Foster, (of L), Bigelow, and Whitman, and in the evening, the question, shall the bill pass? was decided in the affirmative. It was ordered by a special vote to be sent to the Senate forthwith.
