Full Text

THE DREADFUL HEAT in this meridian is about as insupportable as ever. All last night the mercury must have been up to the suffocating point,--for certainly never did poor humanity in this great brick-and-mortar furnace of a city so swelter and simmer as it did after sundown all through the weary hours of the long night.

The Central Park had a great many lodgers,--so did Washington Square, Union Park and Hoboken. Hundreds crowded the ferry boats, in the vain pursuit of the great desideratum--a breath of fresh air.

As in the city, so elsewhere, we judge, by what our Connecticut, Massachusetts, and interior New York exchanges say, that all the country round about is pretty well burnt up. We begin to believe, now, that there is no cool place this side of the Arctic regions, and it would not be a wild supposition to imagine even the icebergs in a state of perspiration. Hot it was and is. Dry it was and is. The only thing that has not drooped is the mercury.--[N. Y. Express.
