RHODE ISLAND WHIG CONVENTION.

NOMINATION OF DANIEL WEBSTER.

At a Convention of Delegates of the Whig party, holden at the State House in Newport, on the evening of the twenty-fourth day of June, A. D., 1835, for the purpose of nominating candidates to represent this State in the Twenty-fourth Congress, George Engs was chosen Chairman, and Matthew Waite and Christopher Robinson Secretaries:

On motion it was Resolved, That a committee of three from each county be chosen to report to the Convention the names of suitable persons to be supported by the freemen of this State for Representatives to the ensuing Congress; which committee reported the names of the following gentlemen as suitable candidates to be recommended to the freemen of this State for their support as Representatives to Congress, the Hon. Tristram Burges, of Providence, and Henry Y. Cranston, Esq., of Newport, which report was unanimously received and adopted; and it was

Resolved, That the above named gentlemen be recommended to the People of the State for their support.

Resolved, That this Convention use every honorable exertion to insure the election of the above named gentlemen.

Joseph L. Tillinghast, Esq., of Providence, introduced the following resolutions:

Resolved, That it is expedient now to nominate and recommend to the freemen of this State, for their support as a candidate for the office of President of the United States, a man who merits and enjoys the unqualified confidence of the friends of the Constitution, of the Union, and of the freedom, safety, and welfare of the Republic throughout our common country.

Resolved, That in the opinion of this Convention, Daniel Webster is emphatically such a man, and we do therefore nominate and recommend to the good People of this State, Daniel Webster, as a candidate for the Presidency in the next ensuing election of President of the United States.

Which resolutions were unanimously adopted.

Voted and Resolved, That the proceedings of this Convention be signed by the Chairman and Secretaries, and published.
