Full Text

We learn, that John Haven, Esq. of this town, who has been cried up as the great friend and patron of the Mechanics and Manufacturers, and who figured so largely at Concord as President of the Tariff Convention, has just imported from Russia, an entire gang of rigging for a new ship, now building on this river. Is it possible? So says Report and Report does not always lie. Report says it was imported into Boston, and brought and landed here by one of our coasters. Well—if this is true, we hope it will forever silence the advocates of Mr. H. We hope we shall hear no more of his liberality and friendship to American manufacturers. This cordage was probably obtained a trifle cheaper, than it could be manufactured for at this place, on account of the tariff operating on hemp. Mr. H. is said to be a great stickler for the tariff, and undoubtedly is on some points!—But has he shown his real liberality and friendship for the manufacturers of this country? We think not. If he had been the real friend of the cordage manufacturers, he would not have imported his cordage, but employed the manufacturers of this, or some other place in the U. States, to have manufactured it for him. They want encouragement,—and to a man of Mr. H's pretensions, they generally look up for aid and assistance,—but at times, are most woefully disappointed. Mr. Haven is said to be a large stockholder in the manufactories, but circumstances show, that he is no farther concerned, than self-interest dictates.
