Full Text
Extract of a letter from a gentleman in Charleston, (S. C.) to a friend in Providence.
"It is pleasing to see how the political opinions of people have changed since the present session of congress: many of the most zealous disciples of the president, are now cursing his philosophical administration, and fervently wishing the period of a new election. Many who were enraptured with his inaugural speech, are now convinced of its insincerity and hypocrisy. They plainly discover the ruinous consequences likely to result from a short-sighted democratic administration, and are vexed that they have been so duped by the intrigues and lies of the jacobinic faction. They find the stories of defalcations, and the great promises of glorious times under the reign of Mr. Jefferson, was all such stuff as dreams are made of. Be assured the moon of democracy is on the wane here; and the sun of federalism beaming forth with redoubled splendor.
"Mr. Burr, who is now here, has expressed his disapprobation of some of the economical measures of government. He is treated with due respect. An entertainment is preparing for him, which promises to be one of the most splendid ever given in America."
