JOY AMONG THE ANIMALS
A SEA LION BORN IN THE CENTRAL PARK MENAGERIE.
The Little Animal Is Bright and Healthy, but Cannot Swim Yet-It Showed Signs of Fight When Approached by a Visitor -How the Mother Will Teach Her Offspring to Use Its Fins.

A little sea lion, a day old, lay on the ground near the sea lions' swimming-tank in Central Park this morning. He is the second sea lion born in New York City.

He is the color of a Maltese kitten, and his mother carries him about by the nape of the neck, much as a cat carries a kitten. He has a large head and big bright eyes. His front fins are enormously large and nearly as long as his body. He makes a sound which could not be told from the bleating of a lamb.

The little animal is not yet able to swim, and for two weeks his mother will keep him safe on dry land. At the end of that time she will carry him into the tank of water on her back.

When she gets the little sea lion into deep water she will dive and leave him to paddle for himself. If he strangles and begins to sink, she will rise beneath him and lift him up on her back again. After he has taken a few swimming lessons in the tank in Central Park he will be able to swim with the rest of the sea lions.

He will live on a milk diet till he is six months old, and then his mother will wean him and he will begin to subsist on solid food, such as bass and herring.

A sea lion was born in Central Park four years ago. His mother died and an effort was made to bring the animal up on cow's milk fed to him in a bottle. The milk did not agree with him, however, and in three or four weeks he died.

The mother of the little sea lion guards him with jealous care. When Keeper Peter Shannon and a stranger entered the inclosure this morning and approached the baby sea lion she bellowed fiercely and climbed out of the water to protect her offspring. The little sea lion himself showed fight.

When the two visitors walked away the sea lion stood over her young and bellowed for ten minutes. The little sea lion bleated like a lamb, the two seeming to hold a conversation together.

The sea lions in Central Park are from San Francisco and are of the non-furbearing kind, which are found from Oregon to Chili.

The fur-bearing sea lions which furnish the sealskin cloaks, are found on the coast of Alaska.

Seals are found on the Atlantic coast and on the coasts of Europe. They have no fur and their skins are not valuable.

Visitors will not be permitted to approach near the sea lion's inclosure for a few days, as it is feared they might frighten the mother sea lion to take to the water and that the little sea lion would follow her and drown.
