Full Text

Whittemore.—The house of representatives at Washington on Monday made short work of Whittemore, the cadetship peddling carpet-bagger from South Carolina, whose nigger constituency re-elected him after he had been expelled from the house. There were but 29 votes in favor of his re-admission, to 134 against. What is strange about it is, that he was most fiercely opposed by John A. Logan, who, when Whittemore came to him whining about his expulsion, advised him to go home and get himself re-elected, assuring him, according to the affidavit of several of Whittemore's friends, "that if he (W.) was returned to congress, he (Logan) would be the first to welcome his return." Whittemore should have known enough about Logan not to place any foolish reliance on his word.
