GROSS MISREPRESENTATION.
In the Boston Repertory of 20th ult. we observe the following gross and infamous misrepresentation, communicated to the Editor of that paper by some mischief-making or disaffected person. There never was a time in the history of Dartmouth College, when more unanimity prevailed among Instructors and Instructed, and when the affairs of the Institution were conducted with more ability, or gave more general satisfaction, than at the present period. We will only further remark, that the wretches, who practice such impositions upon the Publishers of newspapers, and the public, deserve a severer castigation than words can inflict.
"DARTMOUTH COLLEGE
In consequence of some difficulties existing at Dartmouth College, it is understood, that a vacancy in the Presidency of that Literary Institution is shortly expected. The Friends of that college are already fixing their eyes on a successor to Dr. Wheelock. Among the several reverend and learned gentlemen, whom we have heard named as suitable candidates for that office, are, the Rev. Dr. Dana of Newburyport, Rev. Dr. Parish of Byefield, and Rev. Dr. Worcester of Salem. The Rev. Mr. Shurtleff, now professor of Divinity in Dartmouth College, has also been spoken of; and in the opinion of some of that gentleman's friends will eventually be the successful candidate."
"The difficulties above alluded to are said to be of a pretty serious and unpleasant nature, and such as will, probably induce the President to resign.—Indeed, it is well known, that his ill health alone, would be of itself, a weighty inducement to this measure: should the resignation then take place, a successor, and we doubt not a worthy one, will be appointed at the next commencement."
