[New-York Evening Post, July 23.

Public feeling appears to be fast verging to that point, which we hope and trust, will present an undivided and heart appaling front to the enemies of the legitimate and great interests of these U. States—PEACE and FREE TRADE. This is truly a fluttering prospect! The independency of the Northern states are raising their voices in the majesty of their strength, against the war, and using every constitutional exertion to hurl from power the authors of it. In the middle states and particularly in Pennsylvania and our sister state, Maryland, we hail with unaffected joy the present flattering prospect of a complete regeneration from the shackles of democracy and a ruinous anti commercial and agricultural policy, to the blessings of a Washingtonian Peace and free commercial and agricultural system. The October elections will speak a language that shall rouse from their tranquility the demagogues who now rule over us. To the people of Virginia; the honest farmers of the ancient dominion, whose interests have been sacrificed by the ruling party at the shrine of French supremacy, by the reduction of the price of the produce of your labor (at present) at least one hundred per cent. and the prospects still worse; we say, go and do likewise—rally around the friends of peace and the legitimate and attainable rights of your country; elect such men and no others to represent you in the General Assembly of the State, and in the Congress of the U. States—untie the knot which France has some how got twisted about the necks of the present governing party in this country. The sword which has already been drawn from its scabbard, may; and we hope has so weakened it, that with a united exertion, the cord may be made to snap asunder and Virginia once more stand on preeminent ground—It requires but that the phalanx of talents, of which she can justly boast, should be up and doing—let them step forward boldly, assert their country's rights, and we are convinced that a front would be displayed, not only appaling to foreign invaders, but also to those daring invaders of the rights and interests of a free and happy people, from which we have much more to dread than from the incursions of any foreign foe.
