No woman can change the contour of her face, any more than can the leopard change his spots, but Madge Kennedy and Mitzi, the first famous for her beautiful skin and the second for her glorious hair, insist that these two paramount attributes of a woman's loveliness can be controlled by the would-be beautiful.
Both Miss Kennedy and Mitzi are stars of note in the "legitimate" theatrical sky. Naturally, being members of that one profession for women in which, above all others, personal appearance is a definite asset as well as brains, these two women have made exhaustive studies concerning the care of their beauty.
Care of Hair.
"Indeed, I should have nice hair," says Mitzi, "because it has always had intelligent care. I say 'intelligent' because there are a lot of theories about the care of the hair that I think wrong."
"For instance, those hundred strokes with the brush: 25 strokes night and morning is enough. There is danger in more—the same danger as in over-exercise."
"Similarly, I think most women shampoo too frequently. Once a month is often enough. The best shampoo is one egg to a half cupful of water. Rubbed thoroughly into the scalp, it both cleanses and strengthens the hair. After every shampoo I rub in vaseline. It isn't very nice to apply, but it is wonderfully penetrating, and if the hair shows signs of falling out, rubbing in a little once a week will very speedily stop it."
Water, Air, Sunshine.
It will be noted that Mitzi's method of caring for her hair is persistent rather than complex. Miss Kennedy gives the same kind of advice in caring for the skin.
"The only 'beautifiers' I can truthfully endorse are water, fresh air and sunlight," says Miss Kennedy.
Here is Miss Kennedy's daily facial program:
"On rising I always rub my face gently with the cold cream that best agrees with my skin," she explained. "The kind of cold cream used must be determined by each individual because one cream may be good for one skin and not for another."
Care of Skin.
After the cold cream rub, Miss Kennedy's operations are as follows:
Bathe face in warm water, using a pure soap.
Rinse face in clear warm water.
Dash cold water over face.
The cold water is important," Miss Kennedy points out, because it not only invigorates the skin, but also makes it firm. The only treatment the face needs after bathing is the application of a very little cold cream, if the skin is very dry, and a light dusting with powder. Never rub powder into the pores.
