GREAT FIRES.
Three fires occurred in N. York last Friday--two of which amounted to heavy conflagrations. The first was in Gouverneur street,--the second in Walker, and the third at the corner of Front & Dey streets. About fifteen houses were destroyed, occupied principally by indigent families.--The loss by the fire is very great. But the loss occasioned by the fire is as nothing compared to the loss of a valuable life, Mr. John Knapp, a respectable mechanic, attached to an Engine, was instantly killed by the falling of a wall. He was 33 years of age, and had been married only three months.--His wife was on a visit to Philadelphia. Another fireman fell from a ladder and fractured a limb.
Another destructive fire took place on Monday evening last, in the rear of 228 Mulberry-street, occasioned by the careless use of a lighted candle. The total number of buildings destroyed, of all descriptions, is not less than forty.
