Dr. JEHU PERKINS
as a candidate for the Legislature.
[Election to be held on Monday, Dec. 19th, 1854.]
DR. Jehu Perkins.--This gentleman is announced in our paper to-day as a candidate for the Legislature, to fill the seat in that body made vacant by the resignation of I. H. Boatner.
DR. Perkins has never until now been before his fellow-citizens of this Parish, for their suffrages. This is in our estimation, one of the best arguments in his favor; because here as elsewhere, there has of late years been a class of men in both parties who have stood forth to claim every vacant place of honor and profit, as their "heritage."
DR. Perkins is a liberal and enlightened politician, and a gentleman esteemed by all, for eminent social qualities. He has lived among us a number of years, and is we believe known to every man in the Parish. His interest, is the common interest, and as it lies with ours, therefore we may reasonably expect a good representative in him--as such, may we not call him a "Democrat" in the true definition of that word in the virgin English? We think so: for after all, a mere name signifies--nothing.
It is high time that the people of this Republic had began to weigh the applicants for office in the scales of justice; to ascertain what they are; which can only be known, by what they have been. We do not hesitate to recommend the Doctor, as well worthy of the support of this people, and as a proper person to fill the post for which he has been named.
