TERRIBLE ACCIDENT
An Excursion Train Wrecked-Two
Persons Killed-Several Persons
Wounded.
[Little Rock Gazette, 13th.]
The train on the Memphis and Little
Rock railway, conveying the excursion-
ists back to the city from the barbecue
yesterday, at Hill's Lake, met with a
frightful accident five miles from Little
Rock. The train consisted of one box
car and three passenger coaches, and at
the time of the accident was rushing in
at the speed of a mile a minute. The
engine had been reversed, and was run-
ning backwards, with the train in front.
The position of the locomotive, accom-
panied by the too great desire of the en-
gineer to make fast time, no doubt
caused the terrible calamity.
As it came thundering on at the un-
precedented rate, the engine suddenly
bounded off the track, breaking loose its
connections with the baggage car, and
upsetting in the ditch by the track, fell
upon the negro fireman, killing him in-
stantly, and crushing the engineer, who
lies at the point of death.
Among the passengers injured were
Harry Jabine, Bob Ehman and Judge
Warwick. Mr. Ehman's left foot was
crushed, but the extent of the injuries of
the other gentlemen was scarcely known
even to themselves.
A colored man named Lewis was dan-
gerously injured, and it is supposed
will die.
Charles Moon, a colored boy of some
twelve years of age. was killed outright
Arthur Phelps, the engineer, died
about 9 p m. He leaves a widow and a
child about four months old
A great many suffered slight contu-
sions, and, but for the fact of the coup-
ling breaking between the engine and
ears, the loss of life would have been
great.
The coaches were filled to their utmost
capacity with human freight, mostly wo-
men and children, and although quite a
panic ensued among the passengers, at
the time of the accident, many trying to
jump out of the windows, it is fortunate
that only a few received any injuries of
a serious nature.
An extra train left the city at 9
o'clock last evening to bring in the ex-
cursionists.
