gentleman in Paris; dated May 15
1803.
As a political friend without a per-
sonal knowledge of Mr. Monroe, I
loved him for his republican virtues,
and admired-his talents, at all times
so transcendently useful to our beloved
and incomparable country. Happy,
indeed, is it, for the present and future
generations, that the most inveterate
hatred and calumny of our political
foes could not damp his patriotism
nor deprive us of his great talents.
Ere this comes to hand, you will
doubtless have heard, with what a
wonderful rapidity he hath gloriously
executed, what our magnanimous,
truely virtuous and ever to be revered
President had conceived, & in less time
than a farm could be contracted for,
a most glorious treaty was negociated;
by which, not only all contemplated;
natural and political advantages are
obtained, in absolute sovereignty, but
a vast and incalculable territory added
to the only land of freedom and real
political happiness. And thus is the
sanctuary of liberty an asylum of the
oppressed from all countries, enlarged
beyond our most sanguine expecta-
tions.
The purchase of Louisiana confounds the
federal party. They did not expect success;
they ridiculed the measure, yet acknowledged
the country was worth a treasure; and
now it is our own, what will the opposition
say next? They cannot oppose the purc e
they must approve of it at bottom. What
will they do? We advise them to be silent,
and "say nothing about it."
