Wins Top Honors
The Shawtown Chapter of New Farmers of America won top honors in the Quartet Contest held Monday at Carver High School in Mount Olive. The contest was one among five different contests held during the Berry O'Kelly Federation Meeting. The Federation is composed of New Farmers of nine chapters of New Farmers of America in Wake, Sampson, Harnett and Wayne counties.
Other contests held were Officer's Ability, Public Speaking, Quiz and Talent. The theme of the 1951 Federation Meeting was "Developing the Inert Abilities of New Farmers for their place in the world of tomorrow."
Members of the local quartet are Rudolph Lee, first tenor; Haywood Shannon, second tenor; Mack Wright, baritone and Ralph Talton, bass. Other participants from the Shawtown Chapter were Theodore Murchison, public speaking; Charlie McLean, quiz and Prentis Walker, talent. The quartet will compete for State honors at the State Convention at A & T College in June.
