A letter from Batavia to a gentleman in Newburyport, dated Feb. 20, says:
"At the request of captain Joseph Gerrish, of the brig Retrieve, of Newburyport, we address a few lines, to prevent any uneasiness to you or his other friends in America, that might be felt should a report reach you of his having been murdered by the natives of Java.— Some days ago there was such a report at Batavia, and it was undoubtedly credited; but we can assure you to the contrary, as we have received two letters from captain G. mentioning his most providential and unexpected escape.
"The particulars are briefly these:— Captain Gerrish entered into an agreement with us for a cargo of sugars, to be delivered at the port of Samarang, whither he proceeded with his vessel to take it in—when her loading was accomplished, in consequence of a delay regarding the necessary papers for his out-clearance, captain G. came up to Batavia, by land, in company with one of our firm, and left Batavia again almost immediately, to return to his vessel at Samarang. On his way down he fell in with a band of some hundreds of insurgents, by whom he was taken prisoner, and kept for several days, suffering great hardships; however, he was rescued by a party of Dutch troops, and reached his vessel in safety. He dated his last letter on the 10th, and was to sail with a full cargo on the 11th."
