Major Riddle of the 5th U. S. Infantry, with a detachment of 30 men, set out from the Post at Natchitoches, and proceeded as far as Pecan Point on the Red River, for the purpose of detecting illicit traders—having reached the village of Cado, he there arrested Francis Dursey with a considerable quantity of goods and Peltry. Dursey afterwards effected his escape from the guard. From thence the Major with his detachment proceeded to Pecan Point, where he fell in with and secured John Petty, of the firm of Mabbett and Petty, together with merchandise to the amount of about $2000.
As Major R. was returning to the place where his detachment embarked from, he fell in with and secured Mabbett, the other partner of the above named Petty, who, with his boat's crew together with the goods taken, he brought to this city on Saturday last. They are now under arrest in Orleans, and the property given over to the proper authority for adjudication.
