The Nominees
[Sentinel-Democrat.]
Hon. John E. Cooper, the nominee for Circuit Judge in this Judicial District, is known to every voter, either by sight or by reputation. Since he has been on the bench he has displayed those qualities, which are desirable in a Judge, in such a satisfactory manner that no one has opposed him for the nomination and we feel safe in saying that he will have no opposition from the Republicans. He has been the Judge of the people, and all the people, and his decisions and rulings have been so honest and fair that he is as popular with Republicans as with Democrats. That he will be elected if he lives, there can be no doubt.

Col. L. M. Day, the nominee for Commonwealth's Attorney, has been a citizen of Wolfe county for nearly 20 years and has a large acquaintance throughout the district. He is a regular practicing attorney and is regarded by the bar as qualified to discharge the duties of the office. Col. Day is a strictly temperate man and a leader in his county in morals and religion, being a regular communicant of the Methodist Church South. He is a native of Virginia and his manner shows that he possesses the instinct and feeling of the best families of our mother Commonwealth. Being active, vigorous, and energetic, there can be no reason why he should not perform the duties of the office to the satisfaction of every one who desires an enforcement of the criminal laws. He is very courteous and affable in his manners and is an agreeable man to transact business with. As a speaker he takes the rank among the best lawyers in the district. These qualities commended him to the Democrats of the district and doubtless will also be appreciated by men of all parties, and his election next August is beyond question.

The convention at Hazel Green, Wolfe county, for the nomination of Democratic candidates for Circuit Judge and Commonwealth's Attorney, was organized Thursday morning and continued until Saturday night.

Hon. John E. Cooper, of Morgan county, was renominated for Circuit Judge on the first ballot, without opposition.

There were four candidates for Commonwealth's Attorney, and the contest one of the hottest in the history of the district. One hundred and thirteen ballots were taken, when a decision was reached in favor of L. M. Day of Wolfe county. Mr. Day is more a farmer by profession than a lawyer, being almost a stranger in the Circuit Courts, his practice having mainly been confined to the magistrates' courts, while his opponents, M. M. Redwine, of Elliott county; Mr. J. B. White, of Estill county, and Judge B. D. Lacy, of Owingsville, are all lawyers of extensive practice and recognized ability. The hostility to Mr. Day's candidacy in this vicinity, amongst leading Democrats, is bitter and unconcealed. There is nothing said against the personal or private character of this candidate, but it is claimed and admitted on all hands that he is totally unfit for the office, and that his election would surely inure to the public disadvantage.

[Owingsville Outlook.]
The displeasure at the nomination of Col. L. M. Day for Commonwealth's Attorney, here is undisguised.

Dissatisfied Democrats.
[Mt. Sterling Gazette.]
A great many Democrats of this county are dissatisfied at the action of the Hazel Green convention in nominating Col. L. M. Day for Commonwealth's Attorney, and some declare that part of the Montgomery delegation violated their instructions in voting for him. As this is a Democratic family fight we do not think it appropriate for us to go into details about the matter, but it is our privilege to criticise the nominee. We endorsed Judge Cooper because we thought he had made an honest, fearless and capable Judge, and we were in hopes he would be assisted in the good work of grinding out justice by a more competent man than Col. Day. We have nothing to say about the latter gentleman personally; but he is not the man for the place, and is not suited in any way to fill the position. It is a blunder on the part of the Democrats who nominated him, and before we make any further comments, we would like to know whether the Democrats who are doing the most kicking will support a better man if he announces himself. Talk is cheap, but will you walk up to the puncheon and vote against a Democratic nominee?

Col. L. M. Day.
[Licking Valley Scorcher.]
The nomination of this gentleman for the office of Commonwealth's Attorney by the Hazel Green convention will be hailed with satisfaction by the democracy of the district. Dignified, courteous and well qualified, but at the same time earnest, determined and courageous, he will bring to the discharge of the duties of the office all the qualities necessary for their faithful performance. He is a democrat of the old school, thoroughly indoctrinated with the principles of our grand old party, and will bear its flag gracefully in the campaign.
