JOSEPH E. DANIELS
THE NAME IS SATCHEL:
Joe Ryan said "Joe, you had better get on out here so you can talk with the greatest pitcher I ever had on my staff."
As you know the present Atlanta Crackers was, at one time, known as the Miami Marlins and Joe Ryan was president of the club.
Satchel Paige was sitting in the dugout playing with two or three baseballs as I approached. He said "Hello, Joe; long time, huh." I said "yes," and then we got to talking about his baseball life.
I said: "Satchel where in the name of goodness did you get that name of Satchel." And he said: "When I was a small child I always had a bag to carry the bats and ball gloves--anything that the team used."
I asked: "Why did you carry them," and he said, "because they belonged to me and if they didn't let me play where I wanted to play I just up and took my bag and went home. Then they started to call me--or rather--they would say here comes the bag with the satchel, and so they started to call me Satchel".
I said, "Satchel I was you pitch against Atlanta Black Lookout". He said "I remember you were pitching for the Atlanta Black Crackers".
He said "you came from Morehouse didn't you". I said yes.
He said "you see I don't forget people---rather --I don't forget nobody"
I said "Satchel do you remember your biggest thrill". He said, "I sure do. It was in Birmingham. We were playing a team--let's see --I think it was the Memphis Red Sox--so I said good and loud that I was going to strike out the first six men to face me."
"Well, I struck out the first man, the second man, the third man, the fourth man, the fifth man. Oh yes, before I started to strike them out, the other team started talking loud and joshing me, saying what they were going to do, and the stands was in an uproar."
Well after I struck out the five men, I looked over at their bench, and one of the players of the Memphis team was waving a white flag, meaning they had surrendered.
"So I let the next man fly out to the outfield. That was my biggest thrill".
