New York, (CNA) Sept. 5--Sam Brown, jobless Negro worker and Mrs. Eleanor Henderson, white, were arrested here last week for leading a group of unemployed workers to the Home Relief Bureau at 235 East 125th street in an effort to get aid for them. In Harlem Court, Magistrate Aurelio pronounced them "guilty" of disorderly conduct.
Mrs. Henderson, who is the wife of Donald Henderson, instructor at Columbia University, is an active member of the Unemployed Council of Upper Harlem. Together with Brown, Mrs. Henderson led unemployed workers to the relief station. In front of the station, Patrolman George Green, white, struck Brown with an iron bar. Mrs. Henderson rushed to his defense, and eye witnesses report that it was only her prompt action that saved Brown from being killed.
Magistrate Aurelio attempted to inject racial hatred into the trial by questioning Mrs. Henderson as to what she, a white woman, "was doing with a colored man."
Both Brown and Mrs. Henderson are held without bail pending sentence.
The International Labor Defense is fighting the case.
