Full Text

Extract of a letter from Washington, Jan. 7, to the Editor of the Evening Post.

A petition, humiliating to the country, was presented this morning, in the House of Representatives from the inhabitants of the Indiana Territory. They state, and produce the vouchers to prove the same, that the Kentucky Volunteers, sent into the Territory under Gen. Hopkins to protect the inhabitants against the savages, actually committed the most wanton depredations on private property-on almost every species of property within their reach. Instead of protecting the inhabitants, they played the savage with their own Fellow Citizens. Thus sir we are at length engaged in a contest not to do our enemy the greatest possible harm, but our friends, and ourselves.

The Petitioners claim from the government, compensation for those depredations, and the claim is referred for that purpose.
