Full Text
"The Spirit of the U. S. A." is the vital spark that glows in the bosom of every true patriot. It animates us in our national life. It animates us in business, in everything we do to keep our country in the very forefront of the world's activities.
It deals in terms of powerful, human drama with a phase of American life with which most of us are familiar—that period of stress and turmoil just previous to America's entry into the great war and thereafter, when our gallant doughboys were fighting the battle of civilization in the shambles overseas.
Written by Mr. Johnson's mother Emilie Johnson, "The Spirit of the U. S. A." is strong in human qualities. Mary Carr is the mother and Johnnie Walker is the son, who goes to the front as a worker in the Salvation Army, rather than stay at home, because he has been turned down by the Army because of defective eyes.
The war scenes are particularly vivid and form a canvas of stupendous magnitude against which the producer has painted in swift and masterful strokes his deeply moving human story.
"The Spirit of the U. S. A." is not a war picture, although several phases of two of the greatest battles of the World war are shown in stirring and magnificent array.
All members of the cast deserve a word of mention. Besides Mr. Walker and Mary Carr, the cast includes David Kirby, Rosemary Cooper, Carl Stockdale, Dickie Brandon, Gloria Grey, Cuyler Supplee and others.
