While Shooting at Pigeons He Kills His
Partner.
Two young miners named Hiram Nickwinter and Robert Parker worked abreast
together at one of the Reading collieries
at Shenandoah. They were paid their
month's wages Saturday and sojourned
to the suburbs of the town to test their
skill at pigeon shooting. They took a breech-
loading gun with them and loaded it with
shot. Nickwinter took the gun and blazed
at a pigeon the moment it left the trap.
The bird was not injured, and it flew low
and circled toward the rear. Nickwinter
wheeled about quickly and emptied the
gun again at the pigeon. This time the
load struck his partner, who was standing
behind him. The top of Parker's head
was blown off, leaving the brain exposed.
He lingered only a few hours and died.
The accident caused great excitement and
it is suspected that both men had been
drinking before they commenced to shoot.
Deceased is a nephew of Senator John
Parker. Nickwinter surrendered himself
and the disposition of him awaits the ver-
dict of the coroner's inquest. It is be-
lieved he must stand trial, as killing
pigeons in itself is an unlawful act. There
is no doubt but that the sad affair was an
accident.
