dollars. The amount for military ser-
vices alone is about fifteen millions of
dollars. The Minister of War stated
that there were 30,000 officers on the
books as pensioners. Among the civil
pensioners is the sister of Robespierre.
Her pension was granted by the Direc-
tory, and has been paid by all the sub-
sequent governments. There is also
one to the nurse of the King of Rome,
which has in like manner been respec-
ted in all subsequent changes.
