ANCHORAGE, (AP) Rescuers reached the shattered hulk of an Air Force cargo plane high on an Alaskan glacier Monday and began the task of bringing out the bodies of nine crewmen.
The crippled C124 failed to clear a 5,200-foot mountain range late Sunday as it came in, with two of four engines out, for an emergency landing at Homer, on the tip of Kenai Peninsula. The giant plane was demolished as it struck Petrof Glacier between the 3,000 and 4,000 foot levels.
The Globemaster had disappeared into clouds while being escorted across the Gulf of Alaska by Coast Guard amphibians.
A massive air-sea search ended when a civilian pilot spotted the wreckage Monday morning. Helicopters lifted a rescue team to the spot. There were no survivors, so removal of bodies began.
The C124 took off from McChord AFB about noon Sunday on a flight to Kodiak. It carried more than 17 tons of classified military cargo.
