Last Friday Morning, just before the Post left Newport, Capt. Malbone arrived there from Cape Nicholas Mole Hispaniola, and informed, that on the 2d of last Month they had there a most violent Shock of an Earthquake, which did great Damage at all the principal Settlements: particularly at Leogane, the West End of that Island, where 'tis said, above 1000 Inhabitants perished, and the Town of Portau Prince almost wholly destroyed by the Mountains being overthrown and the fall of Houses, from the Ruins of which they had already dug out 500 dead Bodies—That at other Parts of the Island, Mountains were rent asunder, and at several Places the Earth opened and swallowed up Plantations, Houses, &c.
