JUSTIFIABLE COMBINATION.
There seems to be times when combination of interests for the purpose of keeping up the price of a certain commodity is justifiable. That is when one is on the combination side. Then it should only be justifiable in so far as it did not arbitrarily set an exhorbitant price upon the article in question. Right here in Colorado there is now a combination of this kind that seems in every way just and equitable. Reference is had to the Potato Growers' & Dealers' association.
This association was not organized to corner the potato crop of the country, or even of a small section of country, in order to arbitrarily force up the price of potatoes. Rather, it was organized to keep the price from falling to a point where the farmers would lose from 5 to 10 cents a hundred on actual cost of production.
That it has accomplished this, every dealer and farmer in this section are agreed upon. Dealers also claim that no more orders would have been received here had the price been ten cents less, than with the price at 30 and 35 cents a hundred.
Fully eighty per cent of the farmers in the potato belt are now members of the association, and it would be well for those who are not already members to look into the matter thoroughly, and then being satisfied that it is to their interest to stick together, join the association. It seems the only way to maintain present prices and eventually gain a little increase.
