Lay Bishops. -Perhaps all our readers are not aware that in some of the German states, the chief ministers of the church are laymen. In Mecklenburg Schwerin, the archduke, in virtue of his office, is bishop of the church, and there is now great excitement among the Protestants because he has refused to perform his promise, made last year, to convoke a synod to reform church abuses. In Prussia the king is presiding bishop, but on account of other duties cannot discharge those of his spiritual office; and in January last Von Rochlitz was appointed his representative.
