To the Union Men of Belmont County.
The political campaign in Ohio is now open. The Confederate Democracy of the State have their ticket in the field, and will make herculean efforts to elect it; and, failing in that, they will struggle to make gains on their present representation in Congress and to elect their County tickets.
The Union State Ticket will be nominated in a few weeks, and shortly after that the Congressional and County Tickets.
Our County, we presume, they will look upon as disputed ground, and will therefore make gigantic efforts to carry it. The ticket to be elected in this County next Fall, independent of State and Congress, is a very important one, viz: Probate Judge, Sheriff, Auditor, Commissioner, Coroner, Surveyor, and Infirmary Director. Our friends can see, at a glance, the local importance of this election, and the necessity that we should avail ourselves of every honorable means to triumph in it.
Belmont County, last Fall, cast Three Thousand Three Hundred and Sixty-Three votes for Gov. Cox, and elected the entire Union Ticket by decisive majorities.
This result should be followed up next Fall by a still more decisive victory; and it will be done if our people are vigilant.
In our judgment, the best thing our friends can do just now is to, at once, add three or four hundred subscribers to the Chronicle. The People will read, and if those who are interested in the solution of the questions now before the People will look to it a little, they will read the right kind of papers and documents. At this time, too, the public mind is not excited to a very great extent, and the people will receive impressions much easier than they will a few months hence, after demagogues have stirred up all the baser passions by appeals in behalf of an effete aristocracy and defunct party, known as the "Democracy."
We beg of our friends, in every Township, to consider this matter, and act upon it an early day. We think they will find the Chronicle an efficient co-laborer in battling the clans of State Rights Confederate Democracy, and in rallying the voters of our County.
