It is true there are people who cannot be made to understand that the war is over, but we think the time is at hand when John Hancock can poll as many electoral votes for governor as Winfield Scott Hancock did for president. If not, why not? Martin Ball.
The conditions that controlled the action of the Texas democracy, in reference to Gen. Hancock, do not exist in state politics. A prominent Texas democrat once told the Examiner: "I know that John Hancock is a man of absolute integrity, and he is the brainiest man in Texas, but as long as I have any political aspirations myself I am afraid to espouse his cause. The men who, in 1861, antagonized his views, still live and they will fight him as long as they live, because they do not propose to eat any ante-bellum crow. Another generation of Texans will do him justice, as they will Sam Houston." This may or may not be a solution of the question, but it is tendered for the Ball's prayerful consideration. But why worry about the gubernatorial succession? The incubus is with us yet, and the state might go farther and fare worse than to give him a third term.
