San Francisco, March 6.—A row in high life occurred this evening. The Alta to-day published a somewhat humorous account of the manner in which William Hayes, a prominent lawyer, made and subsequently withdrew charges against a member of the police force. Hayes took umbrage at the article, and this evening walked into the sanctum of Colonel McComb, of the Alta, and demanded a retraction. The Colonel replied: "I am not in a retracting humor," or something to that effect, when Hayes pulled out his watch, and making a motion as if holding a pistol in the side pocket of his coat said: "I will give you just five minutes to make a retraction. If you don't I will shoot you." McComb's military genius rose to the emergency, and with one well-delivered blow he sent the little attorney sprawling, and then sat down on him and proceeded to build a first-class head on him. Others interfered, Hayes' pistol, a self-cocker, was taken from him, and a policeman called in, who took the belligerents to the station-house, where McComb made a charge for carrying a concealed weapon and threats to take life against Hayes, who was released on bail of $1,100. A charge of battery was entered against McComb, who got off on $50 bail. Hayes enjoys the reputation of being somewhat peppery, and disposed to magnify small offenses against his dignity.
