SAN DIEGO, Cal., Nov. 22. (UP)—Thirty-one persons were injured, four so seriously they probably will die, when two express street cars collided headon on the outskirts of the city here today.
The crash occurred in a dense fog as a heavily loaded La Jolla-Mission Beach car bound for San Diego, ploughed into an Ocean Beach bound car.
Filled with men and women, commuting to work in San Diego, the inbound car telescoped the Ocean Beach car, tore up tracks over a wide area, and snapped poles carrying high tension power lines.
Wreckage was strewn over a wide area.
Most seriously injured were Helge Erickson, 28, motorman on the La Jolla-Mission Beach car; E. H. Neely, W. C. McAllister, 32, and Louise Hugus. Hospital attaches said they had little hope for the recovery of any of the four.
The wreck occurred at the height of the morning rush hour and immediately all available police, navy and private ambulances were rushed to the scene.
Rescue workers were hampered in their work by broken high tension lines, which snapped and sparked with deadly current, until all power in the area was shut off.
First police rescuers to arrive at the scene reported the groaning, screaming victims were attempting to crawl from the wrecked cars, and had to be restrained because of the danger of electrocution from the charged steel cars.
Through bleeding lips the two motormen mumbled confused explanations.
"We did all we could," Weiss said as he was placed in the last ambulance. He had refused to leave the scene until police convinced him all injured passengers had been cared for.
